Anyone who steps into the Joint Research Center Zeeland (JRCZ) in Middelburg cannot fail to notice. Ruden Riemens' colourful, striking photographs immediately catch the eye. The life-size black-and-white photos, which symbolise the JRCZ's four education and research themes (water, energy, food and biobased economy), feature colourful images of objects and students.
The photographs add dynamism to the black-and-white images and are mostly surprising. They show in an often fun way what the teaching and research involves, what topics are covered and what materials the students and researchers work with. "Each face tells a unique story and evokes different feelings in the person looking at it," JRCZ manager Leo Blok said on Thursday 15 March during the unveiling of the artwork.
He thinks the photos show a nice diverse picture of the students working in the JRCZ. "Let's use this unveiling to reflect on the power of community and the value of sharing different perspectives," he said. Present at the unveiling were portrayed students Silvia Popova, Venetia Pasalari, Kaloyan Dimitrov, Sandra Martine Ojea, Luc Flake, Bartosz Bielecki and Ivan Miracle Argon. They received a print of 'their' photo from Riemens' hands.
